How to find a specific person on Facebook

The Facebook search people feature allows you to find certain friends based on their name. Generally, the Search box in the blue bar on the top part of the site allows you to search for various things on Facebook including groups, pages, events and things that your friends liked. In most instances, you utilize this box to find people. You can search for people you are already friends with and just wanted to go straight to their Timelines. Oftentimes, you can use it to find people you want to add as friends.

When finding someone on Facebook, the site autocompletes the names that you key in and assumes that you are trying to go to one of your friend’s timelines. It is important to note you can utilize the Facebook search people feature in two ways. The first method is when entering the name of the person, someone with the same name appears in the menu. With this approach, follow these steps:

Facebook Search People

  1. Start by entering the name of the person you are trying to find in the Search box. Take a close look at the name of persons who appear in the autocomplete menu. Remember that Facebook presents first your friends and then the “friends of friends”. There is a possibility that you might find the person you are looking for in this menu.
  2. Once you find the name of the person in the autocomplete menu, highlight the name using your mouse or arrow keys.
  3. Tap on the name or press Enter. This will direct you to the Timeline of the person where you can check if you know him/her and add him/her as your friend.

As for the second approach where you cannot find the person you are searching for, you can find more results with these steps:

  1. Key in the full name of the person you are looking for in the search box.
  2. Tap on “See More” at the bottom part of the search menu. At this point, the search menu expands to present you with new options for search. Once you enter a name and then tap on “See More”, you can widen your search on People, Pages or Places related to the name that you entered.
  3. Click on the “People Named” option. You can find a blue friend icon next to this option. The search results page appears with a wider preview of the profile photos and Timeline information. On the right side of the page, you can utilize options to narrow down your search with fields such as Employer, Gender, Current City and more.
  4. Utilize the fields on the right section of the page to narrow down the search on the person you are looking for. It is best to utilize any details that you know such as his/her hometown or where he/she works.
  5. Once you find the person you are looking for, you can add him/her as a friend.
